Visas

A visa is required for entry into China for all nationalities except Japan, Singapore and Brunei who are allowed visa free stays under 14 days. Travellers holding APEC cards are allowed entrance visa free if their card has already been approved for China.

In some cases, you may be required to provide further information or documentation and if this is the case we will notify you as soon as possible.

Booking a Single Room

On this particular tour we are pleased to be able to offer travellers the option of pre-booking a guaranteed single room. Due to the variety of accommodation used on this tour, single rooms are available for a majority of the nightstops, however it would still mean sharing on any overnight trains. All of our tours are planned and operated on a twin-share basis, meaning that the standard cost is based either on individual travellers sharing accommodation with another group member of the same sex, or people who book together sharing accommodation.

Vaccinations and Your Health

We recommend that you contact your primary care physician or a travel doctor for advice on vaccinations and travel health and we advise that you check to see if your tetanus-diphtheria booster is still valid every 10 years.

Insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all our customers. At the start of the trip you must provide us with: the name of your insurance company, your policy number, a 18 hour medical emergency contact number, and the expiry date of the policy. You should ensure that your policy covers you for medical expenses and repatriation. If you are unable to provide all this information at the start of the trip you will not be allowed to join the trip. You can purchase insurance easily online by checking our Travel Insurance page.

Luggage

One main piece of lockable baggage and a shoulder bag. Total allowance: 44lbs/20kgs. Remember, you are expected to carry your own baggage – so don’t overload yourself. It is essential that your baggage is lockable; the airline/train authorities insist on this. Please be aware, before boarding a flight in China that the Chinese authorities will only allow bottles onto aircraft if they have been checked in as main luggage. Any bottles in the hand luggage may be confiscated.

Essential China was an excellent tour as a great gateway to see the highlights of China, to experience the variety of the regions, and see differences of the countryside and the cities. The itinerary worked well, and despite the lengthy travel times I found we had enough time to rest and yet see each new place. The monastery stay was a highlight. It is a wonderful experience to stay in a relaxing place, especially after the back to back stays in cities. The time in the cities was excellent and interesting but equally so was the time in the countryside, an additional countryside stay with fresh air and views of rural life between Shanghai and Xian would have been welcome as a nice to have.

Great trip! I like the fact that everything is organised for you. You turn up on day 1 and then simply follow the itinerary. Our guide Leah was an excellent tour guide. She was the most organized tour guide I have ever had. She went above and beyond and helped people go to hospitals, post offices, stores, etc. She even helped serve us our meals if the restaurants were busy so we didn't have to spend so much time waiting.

Sophie

I had a FANTASTIC tour around China which was mainly due to our lovely tour guide Leah who was fun, kind, professional and enthusiastic at all times. Leah surpassed all of my needs and wants when visiting the China. We saw fantastic sights in China and Leah was always extremely enthusiastic about each one despite having probably seen them 100 times before our tour! She also made it possible to do other things we wanted to do, for example, some of the group tried dog, snake and bamboo rat at a local restaurant in Guilin as they really wanted to and organised the whole thing for them! The whole tour was brilliant and after telling my mum and sister and showing them my pictures they are planning on coming back to China with me and hopefully we will be able to have her as our tour guide again!

Benjamin

The tour is very well-organised and we saw a lot of things that most people who visit China would not see.

The itinerary was very busy with a lot of activities scheduled which I enjoyed as I like to see and do a lot when I go travelling. Jeannette, our guide was great in informing us about what activities we would be doing on each day, as well as little things such as answering questions for us, helping to order food for us, recommending places for us to eat and visit and also helping us to carry our luggage. The trip would not have been half as good without her.

Lucinda

I loved it! Despite the tour lasting only three weeks I felt like I got a real taste of China - each new place we visited was so different from the last. I felt that we did a lot and saw a lot whilst having the time to take it all in. The tour, in my opinion, also had the perfect balance of organised group activities and free time. The specific group of people I travelled with greatly contributed to my enjoyment- I've made some great friends as a result of this trip, something that I didn't necessarily expect beforehand! All in all this trip was an incredibly rich and unforgettable experience!

Johanna

The trip was very well organized. Itinerary was great, managed to see a lot without feeling stressed and didn't feel like we were killing time anywhere. The tour guide was well informed and always helpful and polite. She knew a lot about Chinese history and could answer all questions. She even managed to cope with the more problematic individuals in the group.

John

A very good tour giving a great introduction to China helped by an excellent guide. The accomodation was really good. Even better than we expected. Very helpful leader! We both can't say anything bad about her. Any problems we had she helped with.

Sheldon

I really enjoyed the trip the people and tour leader she was excellent made it very enjoyable. I celebrated my 40th Birthday this year and had always wanted to see the Pandas - the tour was chosen with this in mind. The accommodations were better than I was expecting. Transportation was also good.

Mark

We saw a lot of amazing things in a short space of time which was great! The highlight for me was the pandas and the warriors. Our guide made a very busy itinerary run smoothly and it was very easy for us to get around and have a good time.

Karina

I had a fantastic trip, I loved having all the stress taken out of the trip by our guide and we got to go to places that I wouldn't have found myself. Also, getting to become friends with people all around the world was great. I'd only not recommend it to people who enjoy organising everything themselves and not staying in hotels. Leah was a fantastic leader, always able to answer any questions we had. She would always quickly and effectively deal with any problems we had. We felt like she was part of our group while at the same time being a reliable, responsible person we could completely trust to deal with everything, so I never had to worry about anything so could just enjoy the tour.

Courtney

The tour was very good and showed a wide variety of what China has to offer. Jeanette was the first female tour leader that I have had and I thought she did a very good job. I especially enjoyed the group meals she arranged. The choice of food was very good and she always made sure we we're able to try the local specials. She was very knowledgeable and did not mind answering any questions I had about the chinese culture or history.
