Day 1: Arrive Beijing

Arrive at any time during the day and make your way to the hotel. An evening group meeting is planned followed by an optional dinner.

Day 2: Beijing

Spend the day exploring the central Beijing’s sites starting with a morning orientation of Tiananmen Square.

Day 3: Beijing / Sleeper Train

Spend the day exploring the impressive Great Wall, before boarding an overnight hard sleeper train to Baotou.

Day 4: Baotou

Arrive Baotou in morning time. Private transfer to the grassland for home visit. Night stay in a Haridaga Ger.

Day 5: Hohhot/Yinchuan

Transfer to Huohhot train station for overnight hard sleeper train to Yinchuan.

Day 6: Yinchuan

Arrive in early morning and tour to Helanshan Mountain, Imperial Mausoleum of Western Xia, and Shapotou Desert.

Day 7: Yinchuan/Xiahe

Fly to Xiahe in early afternoon. Orientation walk in the streets of Labrang and enjoy Tibetan market.

Walking tour of Labrang Monastery, the largest Lamaism institute in the world.

Bus to Langmusi including Milarepa Pavillion tour en route.

Day 11: Langmusi/Songpan

Drive to Songpan, once an important trading post on the Tea Horse Road. Spend the afternoon wandering leisurely around the old town.

Free day exploring the mysterious town of Songpan.

Day 13: Songpan/Chengdu

A bus ride of 8 hours or so will take you to Chengdu, a city famous for pandas and spicy food.

Day 14: Chengdu

Morning excursion to Panda Breeding Center. Afternoon drive back to city area, and visit to Huanglongxi old town en route.

Day 1 Beijing
Nihao! Welcome to Beijing, the Capital of China. Your tour begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, and there will be more information about the meeting when you arrive at the hotel. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask at reception. Your group meeting will include details about your trip, followed by an orientation walk and optional dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2 Beijing
Today we’ll explore famous sights in Beijing. There will be a lot of walking today as well as using public the subway to get around. After breakfast, we will take the metro to Tiananmen Square, one of the world's largest public squares, home to the Monument of the People's Heroes and the Great hall of the People. Then enter the Forbidden City, built from 1406 to 1420, a ceremonial and political center of the Chinese government for more than 500 years. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is listed by UNESCO as the most extensive collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. After the Forbidden City, we will stroll in the alleys formed by lines of traditional courtyards known by Hutong and experience the local lifestyle of Old Beijing.

Day 3  Beijing-Baotou
This morning we’ll take a private bus to visit Great Wall - Mutianyu Section (approx. 2hrs), one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall with 22 towers winding along the mountain ridges. Spend quality time exploring and learning the history of Great Wall of China as well as enjoy the view at Huairou county the suburban area of Beijing.
The great idea is to bring a picnic lunch with you to enjoy at the top the wall during a rest break. We will head back to Beijing railway station from Great Wall, then board an overnight train to Baotou.

Day 4  Baotou-Inner Mongolia
Arrive Baotou and private transfer to the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. Enjoy the scenery of the vast meadows and visit the Hardage Rock Painting en route. Enjoy traditional living style on the grasslands with a visit to a resident's home and then join in optional activities like horse riding or a grasslands tour to see wildlife. Enjoy a beautiful sunset and overnight at a traditional Haridagager (yurt).

Day 5  Inner Mongolia-Yinchuan
Free morning to explore grassland. Then we will take a private bus to the Hohhot train station, the capital of Inner Mongolia. Board an overnight train to Yinchuan(approx. 8 hrs).

Day 6  Yinchuan
We will arrive Yinchuan around 7 am. Upon arrival, private bus to the hotel. Today we will visit the main sights of Yinchuan. First, we will visit Helan Mountain. Helan Mountain is over 6,561 feet above sea level with a peak 11,666 feet. Suyukou Forest Reserve, the scenic forest reserve reposed in the eastern side of the Hanlan Mountain 40 kilometers northwest of Yinchuan, had already made a name for itself in ancient times for the liveliness of its scenery. The scenic zone includes such gorgeous sights as the Baiyu Vale, the Guest-Reception Pine, the Twin Waterfalls, the maze of winding footpaths in a forest of fir trees, fossilized plants, the Sky in a Slip, the Dasi Canyon, the Stone Descended from Heaven, and the Mushroom-shaped Rock. Afterwards, we visit the Western Xia Imperial Tombs. It is the royal mausoleums of the emperors in the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227). Then we will visit a spectacular desert scenic spot Shapotou. It located at the edge of the Tenger Desert.

Day 7 Yinchuan-Xiahe
You have a few hours free time to explore Yinchuan this morning. By noon we will transfer to Yinchuan airport to take the flight to Xiahe. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel. Then you will join your tour leader for an orientation walk.

Day 8 Xiahe
Xiahe is a county in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. It is home to the famed Labrang Tibetan Buddhist monastery, one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside the Tibet Autonomous Region. Today we will visit Labrang monastery the largest monastery in the traditional Tibetan region of Amdo. Established in 1709, Labrang housed over 4000 monks at its peak, but now only has around 1500 monks with another couple of hundred lay students. Labrang is one of the “Great Six” Gelukpa sect monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism.

Day 9 Xiahe/Hezuo/Langmusi
Today will travel by public bus to Hezuo (approx. 1.5 hrs), Hezou is a small town in southern Gansu Province. Upon arrival, we will visit  Hezuo Monastery and the Milarepa Place. Hezuo Monastery is one of the famous Tibetan Buddhism Monasteries in Anduo region and to its east locates the famous Milarepa place. The Milarepa place itself is a unique structure with nine stories. After the tour, we will continue our journey to Langmusi by public bus (approx. 3 hours).

Day 10  Langmusi
Langmusi town is a small alpine town on the eastern edge of the Qinghai Plateau, nestled in a valley shared between Gansu and Sichuan province and straddled by two large monastery complexes. Today you will visit Kirti Gompa and Serti Gompa.

Day 11 Langmusi-Songpan
Travel by private bus to Songpan Ancient Town (approx. 5 hrs). Songpan was once an important trading post on the Tea Horse Ancient Road. It was built in the Tang Dynasty (618–907) and named after the towering pines in the city. Historical traces can easily found in the present layout of the town, such as the blue city walls, low buildings with numerous lanes, four broad main streets (East Street, West Street, South Street and North Street) orderly scattering in the city and ancient bridges over rivers. Everything in the vision gives people a sense of turning back to the old times.

Day 12  Songpan
Today you will enjoy a guided walking tour of this fantastic ancient town.  Songpan influenced by the culture of Tea and Horse Road and emerged grand scale of business after Tang dynasty. Tibetan tea culture and business culture have been a unique representation of Songpan.

Day 13 Songpan/Chengdu
Today is a long travel day. It will take about 8 hours from Songpan to Chengdu by public bus. We will arrive Chengdu in the late afternoon. Your tour leader will take you for an orientation walk of the hotel area. Chengdu, an officially recognized UNESCO City of Gastronomy, is the capital of the Sichuan province and where we begin this Real Food Adventure. It might be one of China's biggest cities, but Chengdu has preserved plenty of its traditional flavor and visitors can still find famous teahouses, numerous markets and some of the most exciting food in China.

Day 14 Chengdu
Visit the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, where you're able to witness the conservation efforts being made to save this endearing endangered species. There are only around 1,000 pandas left in the world, and 80% of them found in the mountains in Sichuan. The pandas have over 600 acres of parkland to live in, and you can get up close and learn more about these majestic creatures. Watch them play, eat bamboo, napping, and munching bamboo. After lunch, head to Huanglongxi Ancient town (driving about 1.5 hours). Huanglongxi named after the Huanglong River which flows through the town. There are ancient cobbled streets, temples, wharves, and houses along its curving alleys in the town. We will back to Chengdu in the late afternoon.

Day 15  Chengdu-Depart
There are no activities planned for the final day, and you can depart the accommodation at any time.

Visas - A visa is required for entry into China for all nationalities except Japan, Singapore and Brunei who are allowed visa free stays under 14 days. Travellers holding APEC cards are allowed entrance visa free if their card has already been approved for China.

Under the current guidelines to get a visa you will need to provide the following:

- Letter of Invitation from a Chinese agency

- Copy of Flight tickets

- Hotel booking confirmation

- Travel Insurance (some embassies ask for this document) 

In some cases, you may be required to provide further information or documentation and if this is the case we will notify you as soon as possible.

Booking a Single Room - On this particular tour we are pleased to be able to offer travellers the option of pre-booking a guaranteed single room. Due to the variety of accommodation used on this tour, single rooms are available for a majority of the nightstops, however it would still mean sharing on any overnight trains. All of our tours are planned and operated on a twin-share basis, meaning that the standard cost is based either on individual travellers sharing accommodation with another group member of the same sex, or people who book together sharing accommodation.

Vaccinations and Your Health - We recommend that you contact your primary care physician or a travel doctor for advice on vaccinations and travel health and we advise that you check to see if your tetanus-diphtheria booster is still valid every 10 years. 

Insurance - Travel insurance is compulsory for all our customers. At the start of the trip you must provide us with: the name of your insurance company, your policy number, a 24 hour medical emergency contact number, and the expiry date of the policy. You should ensure that your policy covers you for medical expenses and repatriation. If you are unable to provide all this information at the start of the trip you will not be allowed to join the trip. You can purchase insurance easily online by checking our Travel Insurance page.

Luggage - One main piece of lockable baggage and a shoulder bag. Total allowance: 44lbs/20kgs. Remember, you are expected to carry your own baggage – so don’t overload yourself. It is essential that your baggage is lockable; the airline/train authorities insist on this. Please be aware, before boarding a flight in China that the Chinese authorities will only allow bottles onto aircraft if they have been checked in as main luggage. Any bottles in the hand luggage may be confiscated.
